MATCH REPORT: AFC Newbiggin 0-0 Prudhoe YC

Charlie Walker20 Aug - 17:47

The Seniors shared the spoils with AFC Newbiggin after a positive display at the Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre.

Despite plenty of chances falling the away side’s way, the YC couldn’t find the back of the net to bring three points back to Prudhoe.

Following a win against Chester-le-Street Town and a defeat at the hands of Redcar Town last week, the Seniors came into the match hoping to gain consistency and momentum in a busy run of fixtures.

As for the visitors, Newbiggin looked to get back to winning ways after draws against Darlington Town and Chester-le-Street Town respectively.

The Match

A quiet opening got us underway in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, before Prudhoe began to flex their muscles and create chances midway into the first period.

The first of these came in the 24th minute, with Brad Mawston cutting the ball back to Brad Lowes inside the box, who saw his effort saved and bounce off the crossbar.

Just a minute later, Thomas Wilson earned himself some space and got a shot off early from distance, which curled just wide of the bottom right corner.

On 32 minutes, a third chance for the visitors came. Freddie Marr was at the heart of things this time; twisting and turning at the edge of The Biggin box but dragging his effort narrowly wide.

An uneventful second half was eventually kicked into gear when the YC’s Wilson saw a dangerous freekick from range saved well by Robert Hodgson at the hour mark

10 minutes later, Hodgson was at the home side’s rescue once again; saving a powerful volleyed strike from Mawston.

Going into the last 10 minutes of normal time, Prudhoe struggled to break down a resolute Newbiggin backline.

In the 83rd minute, a Seniors’ counter-attack led by Berman and Ndiweni caused danger for The Biggin’s defence, however Ndiweni’s attempt on goal fizzed wide of the right corner.

On 85 minutes, the home side had an effort of their own, with a strike from distance on the half-volley flying over the bar.

Deep into injury time, a final chance fell Prudhoe’s way. A cross whipped in by Will Morris caused all sorts of trouble in Newbiggin’s penalty area, landing inside the six-yard box. Unfortunately for the YC, no one could direct an effort on target to snatch the three points.

After an entertaining draw, the Seniors are back on the road on Saturday. A huge game awaits, as Prudhoe make the trip to Lancashire to face Garstang FC in the FA Vase.
