MATCH REPORT: Durham United 2-1 Prudhoe YC

Charlie Walker8 Sep - 15:10

Prudhoe fell to a disappointing defeat against Durham United at Maiden Castle.

The YC took the lead in the first half as Thomas Wilson grabbed his third goal of the season. Shortly after, Durham equalised via Anthony Selvadoray’s strike, before Tomas Boothroyd completed the comeback just before hour mark.

Following a defeat but positive performance against Boldon in their last outing, the Seniors hoped to return to winning ways against their newly promoted opponents, and make it three wins in four matches.

The Match

After a positive start from Prudhoe, the home side had the first opportunity to go ahead. An inswinging corner from Ryan Cook was met by Oskar Duenkel, who should have done better with his free header.

On 20 minutes, YC ‘keeper Wilson was called into action with two huge stops. The first was to intercept a low ball across the Seniors’ box, followed by a strong save from Durham’s volleyed effort.

Against the run of play, the visitors scored the opener in the 27th minute. A counter-attack, starting with a perfectly weighted kick from Wilson, released Thomas Wilson down the left flank. From there, the forward drove towards goal, before coolly slotting past Patrick Dixon to place the YC in the ascendancy.

However, the home side did not let this setback faze them and quickly got back on the front foot. Durham tested Wilson just a minute after the Seniors’ goal, and found themselves level at the half hour mark.

United found a spare man in Selvadoray at the edge of the box, who fired home.

With ten minutes of the half to go, a half chance fell Prudhoe’s way. Fin Baty’s lofted cross reached Brad Lowes, however the number seven couldn’t get enough power on his header to beat Dixon in the Durham goal.

Two minutes later, Wilson was at the Seniors’ rescue, keeping the game all square. At point blank range, the keeper produced a brilliant save, following a dangerous cutback across the box from United.

In the second period, the home side again looked the more positive and had a chance to go ahead early on - Wilson with a super stop one-on-one.

At the hour mark, United got their second goal of the match. Boothroyd tapped home into an empty net to put Durham deservedly in front.

Despite going a goal down, Prudhoe struggled to find a reaction and test the home side, with Durham looking more likely to score throughout.

A series of opportunities arose for United, with the most clear-cut coming on 81 minutes. Goalscorer Boothroyd ran through the centre of the park and in on goal, but the forward couldn’t find a corner with his strike.

Thanks to YC ‘keeper Wilson, the visitors remained in the game until the very end. In injury time, the Seniors’ Riley Boertien combined well with Baty in the Durham box, before seeing a promising effort tipped over the bar.

This proved to be Prudhoe’s last chance at an equaliser as Durham claimed all three points at Maiden Castle.

Next, the Seniors are back at Essity Park, facing Alnwick Town on Wednesday night.
