A brace from the Stang’s Liam Clegg was enough for the home side to advance to the next stage of the tournament, where they will face Northallerton Town away from home.
The Seniors came into the match following a goalless draw away to AFC Newbiggin, although the YC would have taken confidence in the extent of chances created throughout the midweek game.
It was a much-changed squad in the cup tie for Dean Walker’s team, with 13 players unavailable for the trip to Lancashire.
The Match
After a cagey opening to the first half, Garstang had the first real chance in the 24th minute.
The YC’s Sam Wilson was brought into action with a super save to stop an effort from range curling towards the top right corner.
From the resulting corner, the Stang looked threatening yet again, with a scramble in the Seniors’ box eventually cleared away from danger.
Prudhoe found space down the flanks throughout the half but were unable to make the most of the openings and test the home side’s ‘keeper.
On 41 minutes, the away side’s Brad Lowes drove with intent down the right-hand side, however the midfielder couldn’t find the target with his finish from inside the box.
Five minutes later, Prudhoe attempted to breakdown the Garstang backline once more – Brad Rogers gave himself a yard after a clever swivel at the edge of the box, but saw his effort curl narrowly wide of the bottom right corner.
The Seniors were then left to rue missed chances as the home side took the lead on the stroke of half time. Clegg turned well inside the box and fizzed home to put the Stang in the ascendancy with 50 minutes on the clock.
Following a quiet start to the second period, Prudhoe had a serious opportunity to score at the hour mark.
A long throw from Billy Foster eventually reached Freddie Marr, who saw his effort blocked by a last-ditch tackle from Garstang’s Zack Wilkes.
In the 68th minute, the YC were dealt another blow in their FA Vase hopes as the home side grabbed another goal. After intercepting a pass from the Seniors’ Connor Lane, Clegg twisted and turned before firing home into the bottom left corner.
With ten minutes of normal time to go, an opportunity fell for Prudhoe to halve the deficit.
Shane-Stone latched onto Marr’s inviting delivery with a strong header and forced Joe Lawton to tip over the bar. Meanwhile, Jay Plunkett looked to have been shoved in the back in the box, however the referee waved away penalty calls.
Despite lots of pressure in the final stages of the tie, Prudhoe couldn’t find a breakthrough and exited the FA Vase.
The YC will look to bounce back on Wednesday, where they return to league action to face Esh Winning at Essity Park.
