MATCH REPORT: Prudhoe YC 2-1 Yarm & Eaglescliffe

Charlie Walker5 Oct - 11:08

Prudhoe made it three wins from three league matches to cap off a stellar display against high-flying Yarm & Eaglescliffe at Essity Park.

Thomas Wilson opened the scoring for the Seniors, with Yarm finding an equaliser a minute before half time, courtesy of Tom Atkinson.

Midway into the second half, Brad Lowes regained the YC’s lead, and the visitors were unable to find a reply.

Prudhoe came into the game hoping to gather momentum from recent league results, following back-to-back wins against Durham United and Tow Law Town respectively.

As for Yarm, they looked to improve on an excellent five-game winning streak in the league, seeing the side score 16 goals in the process.

The Match

The visitors threatened early on from a free kick on nine minutes. Sam Wilson produced a solid save to stop Joe Scaife-Wheatley's set piece curling towards the left corner.

As the half progressed, the YC looked brighter and began to create chances of their own.

In the 22nd minute, the Seniors capitalised on their first clear-cut opportunity.

Jay Plunkett met a corner whipped in by Baty with a powerful header, forcing Callum Roberts to parry away. However, Wilson was on hand to smash home on the swivel to give Prudhoe the lead.

A few minutes later, Wilson combined with Michael Wright, releasing the number nine one-on-one, but his low effort was saved well by Roberts.

Prudhoe attacked again shortly after and nearly doubled their advantage once more. Freddie Marr’s teasing delivery found Wilson, whose header flew just over the bar.

At the half-hour mark, Y&E threatened down the right-hand side, before strongly appealing for a Prudhoe handball in the box, but the referee waved away calls for a penalty.

Against the run of play, Yarm found an equaliser on 45 minutes. Joe Dalton threaded to Atkinson, who clinically fired home to make it all square at Essity Park.

The away side came out more positive in the second period, and had a chance in the opening stages. Sam Conway’s deep cross landed at the feet of Dalton, but the number eight couldn’t direct goalward.

That said, Prudhoe persevered throughout the half and got their reward in the 66th minute. Marr laid the ball out to Billy Foster, who curled a dangerous cross into the Yarm box. With an outstretched leg, Lowes expertly guided home into the top right corner.

On 74 minutes, Wilson was called into action with a spectacular stop, keeping out Foster Garton’s strike from inside the Seniors’ box.

In the 80th minute, Elijah Berman tested the Yarm backline, using his pace to drive dangerously down the left flank, before cutting back to Wright. However, the forward couldn’t hit the target with his effort.

After a tense climax to the game, with the visitors struggling to break Prudhoe down and the Seniors looking threatening on the counterattack, the YC deservedly held on to claim all three points.

Prudhoe are back on the road next Saturday, facing FC Hartlepool at Grayfields.
