MATCH REPORT: Prudhoe YC 2-3 Boldon CA

Charlie Walker4 Sep - 17:39

Prudhoe suffered agonising defeat at the hands of Boldon after a positive performance at Essity Park.

The visitors took the lead in under five minutes courtesy of Jakub Zych, before Brad Lowes equalised just past the half hour mark.

On the stroke of half time, Boldon regained the lead as Zych secured his brace.

The away side then made it three with Ben Robertson’s effort early in the second period, but Prudhoe brought one back, Lowes getting on the scoresheet once again, with just under 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

The Seniors chased an equaliser with several serious chances on goal, however Boldon held out for the three points.

Coming into the game, the YC hoped to make it three wins on the bounce, following recent victories against Esh Winning and Jarrow respectively.

The Match

The first opportunities of the match fell to the home side in the opening two minutes. An opening for Kieron Symington within a minute of kick off was dealt with by Boldon’s backline.

Then, the YC’s number nine held the ball up well inside the away side’s box, laying off to Thomas Wilson who forced a strong save from Boldon’s Ollie Walker.

Just a few minutes later however, the visitors took the lead. A threatening long throw from Corey Johns found Zych, whose volley rattled the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

10 minutes in, Boldon almost grabbed a second, with an effort from close range ricocheting just wide.

Moments later, YC ‘keeper Sam Wilson was called into action to stop a powerful Boldon strike from the edge of the box.

As the half progressed, the Seniors grew into the game, enjoying more possession in the final third.

In the 20th minute, Jay Plunkett thought he gave the Seniors a foothold back in the game - his strike cleared away by the Boldon defender, with several YC players arguing the ball had already crossed the line.

At the half hour mark, Prudhoe pressed again. This time, Brad Rogers’ effort from the edge of the Boldon box caused trouble for Walker, followed by Billy Foster’s header on the rebound, another chance cleared away on the line.

The Seniors’ positive spell was finally rewarded in the 31st minute. Lowes latched onto an error from the Boldon ‘keeper, and coolly placed home into the bottom right corner from distance.

Just before half time, Zych bagged his second of the match to put the visitors back in the ascendancy. Prudhoe again failed to deal with a long throw, with the centre forward in the right place at the right time to guide into an empty goal.

In the opening exchanges of the second period, Boldon got their third of the match to take the game away from the YC. Scott Purvis’ promising free kick hit the post, falling into the stride of Ben Robertson who slotted home.

On 54 minutes, Wilson was at the rescue for Prudhoe, superbly saving Zych’s strike from point-black range to keep the match within the Seniors’ reach.

The YC did not let Boldon’s two goal advantage faze them and continued to push for a way back into the game.

In the 66th minute, Wilson looked dangerous down the left-hand side, beating his man and firing goalward which Walker parried away.

A breakthrough finally arrived for the YC on 77 minutes, with Lowes getting his second on the night. After a scramble in the Boldon box, Lowes reacted first to fire home, setting up a tense climax to the game.

A few minutes later, Fin Baty saw his curling effort from distance tipped just past the post.

Prudhoe assumed greater control as the final stages of the half went on and had two massive chances to level the game in injury time.

The first opportunity arose from Billy Foster’s long throw, which landed inside the six-yard box. From there, Walker produced yet another great save to thwart Lowes’ volley, denying the number seven of his hattrick.

Shortly after, the YC again swarmed Boldon’s box, with a promising cross causing all sorts of havoc and eventually seeing the Seniors hit the crossbar.

Prudhoe were very unfortunate not to get something from the match, as the away side held onto their lead in the closing stages to claim all three points.

The YC will look to get back to winning ways at the weekend, where they face Durham United at Maiden Castle.
