Prudhoe’s pursuit of historic FA Vase glory was brought to an end by Division One leaders Redcar Athletic
Lucca Taylor grabbed his second goal in as many games just two minutes in, before goals from Adam Boyes and Oscar Fletcher gave the away side the advantage going into the break.
Boyes added his second and third of the night early in the second half, and despite an instant reply from Ryan Ndiweni in the 58th minute, this proved to be only a consolation. A few minutes before the full-time whistle, Fletcher scored a fifth for Redcar Athletic.
The home side went into the game already making history, as the fixture marked the furthest the YC has ever gone in the FA Vase.
Prudhoe YC’s flying start was almost immediately rewarded. A forceful run from Michael Wright down the right flank earned the home side a free kick in a promising area. Similar to last week, Freddie Marr’s inviting delivery caused a scramble in the box, with Taylor being in the right place at the right time to fire home.
In the 8th minute, sustained pressure from Redcar Athletic in YC’s box demanded two superb reflex stops from Sam Wilson. The away side’s third attempt rattled the cross bar and from there Prudhoe were able to clear.
The home side almost doubled their lead in the 10th minute. Jordan Plunkett’s header back from a Prudhoe corner met Liam Dalton, who just fired over the bar.
Despite the YC’s fast opening, the away side levelled the tie 22 minutes in. Boyes fortuitously found himself in between Prudhoe’s centre halves, and coolly slotted his effort into the bottom right corner.
Redcar Athletic then took the lead via Fletcher’s cross-shot, which lobbed Wilson and nestled home.
Like the first half, the second began in similar quick-paced fashion as the away side added a third. A threaded ball by Anderson unleashed Oscar Fletcher, whose pass across the box was bundled in by Boyes.
Ten minutes later, Boyes completed his hattrick and took the tie away from the YC with a chipped effort home.
However, just a minute after Prudhoe scored a second, inciting a potential comeback. Brad Lowes' ball fell perfectly into the stride of Ndiweni, who emphatically finished into the top left corner.
Although the YC showed immense grit and desire throughout the game, they were unable to snatch the vital next goal to shift the tide of the tie.
In the 87th minute, Fletcher’s half volleyed effort from the edge of the box fizzed home, securing Redcar Athletics' spot in the second round.
Prudhoe’s effort on the night could not be questioned. The YC must now turn to the league where they welcome Darlington Town in midweek.
