Fin Baty opened the scoring for the Seniors a quarter of an hour in, before Durham responded courtesy of Phil Kay just past the half hour mark.
Two goals in quick succession from the YC’s Thomas Wilson and Elijah Berman in the second period gave Prudhoe some breathing space in the match, however United’s Charlie Bramwell halved the deficit with just over 10 minutes of normal time to go.
That said, the Seniors held out for a deserved and much needed three points.
Coming into the game, the YC narrowly lost to Park View in midweek, which left Prudhoe without a point in the last five matches.
The Match
The Seniors started the more dominant side with a series of chances in the opening 10 minutes.
Michael Wright was at the heart of the YC’s positive attacking play, bursting down the right-hand side with pace before cutting back to Wilson, whose effort was blocked.
A minute later, after a scramble in the United box, Wright fired goalward but saw his effort saved.
At the 10-minute mark, Wright again showed promise - beating his man on the left side of the box and getting a low shot off which the visitors’ Patrick Dixon stopped well.
Following waves of pressure on the Durham backline, Prudhoe took the lead on 15 minutes.
A dangerous ball whipped in by Baty bounced around the United penalty area, with the ball dropping back to the full back at the corner of the box. From there, Baty curled home to give the Seniors a deserved advantage.
The YC remained in the ascendancy throughout the half, however the visitors threatened in the 28th minute. A free kick by Bramwell was met by Ellis Challinor who directed his free header just wide.
A few minutes later, Durham found an equaliser. A long-ranged effort was not dealt with by Sam Wilson, allowing Kay to tap into an empty net.
On 33 minutes, Wilson produced a strong stop, keeping out Elliot Clarke's powerful header from Bramwell’s corner.
Just before half time though, the Seniors had an opportunity to regain the lead – Billy Foster finished off a driving run with a teasing cross into the box, but it could not be directed goalward by a YC attacker.
After an evenly matched opening to the second half, Prudhoe got their second goal of the game in the 67th minute. Baty whipped an expert delivery towards the back post, with Wilson leaping high to head home.
Four minutes later, Prudhoe made it three. Berman reacted quickly to a loose ball in United’s half and drove towards goal, before slotting home one-on-one.
It was very nearly four for the Seniors. Wilson’s effort was parried away by Dixon, allowing Berman to latch onto the ball and cut back to James Simpson, who couldn’t guide his effort on goal with an outstretched leg.
In the 78th minute, Durham set up a tense climax to the match, with Bramwell pulling one back for the visitors. The number 8 coolly placed his strike into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.
However, Prudhoe managed to dig deep in the closing stages, claiming a huge three points at Essity Park.
Next up for the Seniors is Northumberland Senior Cup action. The YC face Alnwick Town away from home tomorrow night.
