MATCH REPORT: Sunderland RCA 3-1 Prudhoe YC

Charlie Walker2 Nov - 21:42

A frustrating performance saw Prudhoe fall to defeat at the hands of Sunderland RCA at Meadow Park.

Just past the quarter-hour mark, Callum Guy opened the scoring for RCA, before Aiden Stanton doubled the hosts’ lead early into the second period.

The Seniors pulled one back on 60 minutes, but the Sunderland side put the game to bed - Guy securing his brace with 15 minutes of normal time to play.

New signing Christ Zoma made his first appearance for the YC, while Brad Rogers returned from suspension after a red card against Alnwick Town in the Northumberland Senior Cup.

The Match

Following an even opening to the match, Sunderland RCA struck first in the 16th minute.

A well-worked piece of play on the edge of the box released Guy, who poked home through the legs of Sam Wilson.

Now in the ascendancy, the home team began to dominate affairs. In a five-minute period, the YC faced plenty of activity in their own box.

On 26 minutes, Wilson managed to get down and produce a great save from close range, despite a swarm of bodies in front of him.

Minutes later, the Seniors’ ‘keeper was again called into action with a strong stop, after RCA saw initial penalty calls waved away.

At the half-hour mark, RCA looked to have scored in spectacular fashion - Nathan Simpson’s half-volley from distance rattling the crossbar.

The YC managed to survive the Sunderland side’s pressure and began to threat as the half ended.

Just before half time, a teasing cross into the RCA penalty area was cleared only to Fin Baty, who fired inches wide of the bottom left corner.

Straight after the break, Prudhoe pushed again, with Freddie Marr forcing a solid save from RCA’s Karl Dryden after latching onto Thomas Wilson’s pull back.

However, RCA then gave themselves breathing space in the match, courtesy of Stanton’s strike in the 55th minute.

Wilson initially tipped a powerful header onto the crossbar, but, after the YC failed to clear away, Stanton fired home.

That said, it did not take long for the visitors to halve the deficit. In the 60th minute, a dangerous ball whipped in by Baty was met by Plunkett, who leapt well and clinically headed into the bottom left corner.

Shortly after, Prudhoe threatened again; Liam Dalton’s free header flying just over the bar.

The visitors continued to apply pressure with several teasing corners and throws into the hosts’ box, although struggled to create clear-cut chances to gain a foothold in the match.

In the 73rd minute, Brad Rogers’ volley arrowed towards the top corner, but Dryden produced a brilliant save to keep RCA in the lead.

On 75 minutes, the Sunderland side capitalised on Prudhoe’s missed opportunities and found their third of the game.

Appeals for a foul on Thomas Wilson were waved away as the home side attacked on the counter.

From there, Wilson came a long way out and did not get enough purchase on his clearance, allowing Guy to claim the ball and expertly find the back of the net from distance.

In the latter stages of the half, new signing Zoma came on and made a positive impact for the YC, battling well and getting shot off, which was denied by Dryden, in the 83rd minute.

Then, two headers in quick succession from Ben Cleland and Jay Plunkett were unable to test the RCA ‘keeper.

As the game headed into the last minute of added time, Prudhoe had a late chance at a consolation. Zoma pressed well once more, allowing Steven Anderson to latch onto the ball and fire a strike narrowly wide of the top right corner.

After a disappointing defeat in Sunderland, Prudhoe are away at Billingham Town next Saturday.
